W3 Validator Unleash The Error

by glenn101 on February 7, 2010

You may not want to mess with this but it is good to know. Validating your web site is a good thing but may be difficult depending on your site. You may need to deal with this if your working with someone that does want a validated website as a partner or client.

The search engines don’t seem to care but that can change. Validation means your website validates without errors according to the World Wide Web standard. You can run your own or any website through the checker. Check some sites on top of some search results and you will find they are full of errors. As things get more mobile validation may make a bigger difference in the future as other devices may be more sensitive to error filled sites but this is only a guess.

The reason for this or the premise is a valid website won’t break someone’s web browser. A poorly written website can wreck someone’s browser and especially it is a disaster if they are using Microsoft’s Explorer as it is woven into the operating system possibly damaging the code. Browsers are designed to handle a certain amount of errors and display the page the best they can but they have their limits.

This site here when I wrote this does not validate but I am just using standard WordPress with plugin’s from WordPress’ site and a Kubrick Theme modifying the graphics. I may get a new theme in the future. WordPress has been tested in most browsers. If a plugin does not work on a browser there will or should be a notification on the WordPress site. Found a validation page about WordPress Blogs and down the list for other sites as well, a lot of resources for this here.

UPDATE: Dumped the Kubrick Theme, could not take it anymore trying to adjust it. Some top Bloggers said Thesis is the best and easiest to change. I found I wanted (not have to) to make some changes with Filezilla-FTP and HTML kit (both are free) to make a few code tweaks but it is push button easy. You really don’t have to adjust raw code much or at all because it comes with an interface shown in the videos to make your changes, but if you want to take it further you can work on the code, plus it is search engine optimized without code bloat, and properly written. Validation is another story because I prefer just to embed videos just using the code the video sites give and have the widgets and other items that make errors, so I am going to forget the errors for now. Using the Thesis theme straight out of the box may or may not validate to the W3 standards. I don’t know since this site was partially built before on Kubrick and was not a fresh install of Thesis on a clean slate.

There is a link at the bottom I was glad I paid the money there is no comparison between trying to adjust CSS in other themes, with this you just tell it what you want. You will save a lot of hours and headaches. The link at the bottom right of this page goes to the Thesis site with training videos.

Looking around I could not find a video site that offers valid embed code here is a site that will convert Youtube to passable code, here.

The search engines don’t seem to care but they might a little. Their computer scripts may find a site that is tied with another site for top spot. A validated website may be a tie breaker. The details of how engines rate sites is not fully known and not given out for public consumption. They usually keep their new scripts secret so competitor search engines won’t take their cue and copy their new methods.

Here is a quick video on validation.
