Here is something simple to do but very important, lock your domain. I have heard about domain hijacking, although rare but possible. Someone re-registers your website under their name or fake name I guess if it is possible. They transfer it to them filling out whatever they need to with the domain re-registering probably just using your name to initiate the transfer, then to them, they then quote you back a fee to get it back.

I don’t know the details of this transferring the domain name I just heard it is real and it does happen.
They do this as a lot of people don’t update their email address, usually they use an email that was attached to their internet service provider but then they change internet companies. They forget to change to the new email address with their hosting company/domain registrar. The hosting company or domain registrar must notify you by law before the transfer can take effect but if there is no response it can go through.
So when they are notified someone is attempting to transfer the domain they just don’t know about it. There is a time period to stop the transfer if you get the notice but you have to get it and see it. So it is very important to have an email that you use everyday and not full of spam for your website domain communication.
Pretty scary stuff. There is a way (domain locking) to either delay this or stop it all together I don’t know exactly what it does but it will at least help. The normal amount of time to respond to the notification email is 5 calendar days from the information I gathered at ICAAN link here. If you lock your domain it will either slow this for more time or stop any transfers all together I don’t know which but it is easy and free to do in most all cases.
I read that you should make sure your on the administrative contact on the WHOIS-link here information and not your web host. I did a private registration and this is the way mine is so it may need to be changed, not sure yet, since it is private it may be alright.
Here is a video on this.
